Cheryl Heppner Keynote Speaker
Thursday's Presidents' Luncheon
As the executive director of the Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons (NVRC), Ms. Heppner provides direct services to people with hearing loss as well as being a nationally known advocate. She holds a B.A. degree in journalism from Pennsylvania State University and also has taken extensive course work in sign language, non-profit program enhancement and emergency preparedness.
Ms. Heppner is involved in many, many national networks and advocacy projects but the majority of her focus is on improved telecommunications. She also spends a great deal of energy on increasing access to both captioned television and captioning in movie theaters. Her presentations are always informative and guaranteed to make us laugh too!
She currently serves on the Gallaudet University Board of Trustees as well as many other committees.
Among her many awards and recognitions, Ms. Heppner is the recipient of the ALDA I. King Jordan Lifetime Achievement Award and the ALDA Brainstorm Award. Did we mention that she’s beautiful? In 2000, Glamour Magazine named her one of the “Women at their Best.” We know she is beautiful inside and out.

Dr. I King Jordan
Keynote Speaker
Friday's Recognition Luncheon
Dr. I. King Jordan made history in 1988 when he became the first deaf president of Gallaudet University, the world’s only university with all programs and services designed specifically for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Following protests by students, faculty and alumni, later called Deaf President Now (DPN), Dr. Jordan became instantly known around the world as a symbol of what deaf people can achieve.
Following his high school graduation, Dr. Jordan joined the Navy and served four years. An automobile accident at the age of 21 left him profoundly deaf. He then earned his B.A. in psychology from Gallaudet, followed by a M.A. and his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. He held many positions at Gallaudet before being chosen as the president.
Since his retirement in 2006, Dr. Jordan is a sought after speaker. In addition to presentations in the United States, he has done fellowships in Scotland, Poland and France among other sites.
Dr. Jordan holds eleven honorary degrees and too many awards to list. But we are exceptionally proud to know he is the recipient of the U.S. Presidential Citizen’s Medal. ALDA’s highest honor is the I. King Jordan Lifetime Achievement Award which is conferred during the Friday night banquet.
He is famous around the world but when he arrives at ALDAcon, Dr. Jordan is “one of us!”

Ms. Graves has been a pioneer in the field of captioning since its inception. She is president of Caption First which was established in 1989. She holds every state and national captioning certificate that exists and frequently teaches and evaluates those new to the field. She has worked tirelessly to develop standards for CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation). Because of CART, deafened people who do not know sign language can participate in a variety of group settings.
In 2000, Ms. Graves was listed in Today’s Chicago Woman as one of the “100 Women Making a Difference.” In 2010, she received the Robert H. Weitbrecht Telecommunications Access Award from the Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TDI). This is given to an individual, an organization or a company that has made an outstanding contribution by any means to improving the accessibility of telecommunications, media and information technology for people with hearing loss.
